Taking Control of Emotional Eating

A lot of people crave for food when they are at their lowest point emotionally. When one feels down or tremendously depressed, he would turn to food so as to satisfy his needs. While this may be his coping mechanism in dealing with such emotions, the results can be devastating and one may feel regretful afterwards.
Because one is eating whilst he is down, he may consume sweets and high-calories so as to give him the positive energy. However, this would lead to a sudden weight gain and that this is bad for those who are having their weight-loss programs. The perfect way to dealing with emotional eating is to control it.
Emotional eating is discouraged. Why is that? It is because emotional eating is feeding the mind what it wants. The amounts consumed are not controlled until the craving is satisfied. Therefore, emotional eating does not involve physical hunger.
In emotional eating, food becomes a distraction to the person which is why he tends to neglect the well-being of his body. When one feels bad after emotional eating, he tends to eat again because of such regret. It is important to put a stop or at least control one from eating whenever he gets emotional.
Because emotional eating may be because of stress, it is important that one finds an alternative to manage stress. One can try yoga, meditation or getting a massage whenever he feels stressed. With these stress-management programs, one is assured that the stress leaves and that one would not resort to emotional eating. In irregular hours of the day, one may feel the urge to eat.
This urge may not be hunger. To fix this feeling, one can try drinking water so as to suppress the urge. In case one feels the need to eat between meals, one can try to eat small low-calorie, low-fat snacks that are sufficient enough to fill one’s needs. If one would feel down or depressed again, one can actually try to talk to a confidant so as to release those emotions effectively.
Those problems cannot be solved by mere eating. It is healthier that one would just talk to someone instead of eating emotionally. Also, find other hobbies that would help one get distracted from the thought of eating such as playing video games or reading a good book.
Emotional eating is caused by one’s distraught or depressed state. It is important too, though, that one should monitor his eating habits in a way that he is neither overeating nor is he starving himself. One should eat on sufficient amounts on normal times of eating meals. If all those advice could not get a person to stop from emotional eating, then it is better that one should seek professional advice – most particularly, a therapist.
Therapy can definitely help a person overcome such emotions that would lead to emotional eating. In seeking professional advice, one may learn a lot of things such as a probable eating disorder or the solution to all those depressions.
